The Plan.

Well, once again, it's all over but the shouting. On Sunday, I compete in my second marathon, and as usual, I am vacillating between excitement and nervousness. By now, I should be able to accept that this is normal, but still, I find myself surprised by the duality of emotions coursing through my brain.

So, it's time to clearly articulate my plan for race day.

I'd like to hover around a 12-minute-mile pace for the first 16 miles, which will put me at the 16-mile marker a little over three hours after the start of the race. From 16-20, I think it's fine for me to run a little less and walk a little more if I need to. And from 20 through 26.2, I'm giving myself permission to do whatever I darn well please. :)

One of my goals, this year, is to maintain my nutrition requirements -- even when I don't feel like eating, even when I can't stomach the thought of another gel. I feel like I did an OK job of this last year, but I only ate every hour, which I think was a bit too long to go without some calories. So this year, I'm planning on taking in nutrition every 45 minutes, which ought to smooth out that 20-mile bonk. We'll see. :)

But my overall goal, really, is to have fun. I want to see the sights. Take in the day. And enjoy a nice, long run with the added support of an entire branch of our nation's armed forces. I'm looking so forward to running with Marilyn, who is arriving tomorrow for this little adventure. And above all I am just thrilled to be blessed with such an experience. It's a privilege to be able to run, day after day.

So ... here we go!
